About Kay

Author, Columnist, Editor, Reporter…

Currently, Kay is taking a sabbatical from writing her column for The Examiner while she works on a new book project. She will share more about the new book from time to time on this blog.

Kay (Hollenbeck) Hoflander’s popular column Full Circle appeared each Thursday in The Examiner, a daily newspaper serving Independence and Blue Springs, Missouri. Her columns also are published in other Eastern Jackson County communities. She began writing Full Circle in 2005 when she became an “empty nester” and found herself with some free time on her hands. Her humorous and philosophical column has to do with the “reluctant aging of baby boomers” or whatever catches her fancy.

Before working as a freelance writer, Kay worked over the years as a newspaper reporter and editor as well as a publisher of a weekly Missouri newspaper-shopper, The Penny Post. Kay was a reporter and editor for The Examiner in years past when she won numerous writing awards from the Missouri Press Association and Missouri Press Women’s Association. Kay also won writing and editing awards from the National Press Women’s Association and freelanced for The Kansas City Star.

In 2007, Kay published her first children’s book, The Chautauqua Kids and the Fuddy Duddy Daddy, A Tale of Pancakes and Baseball. The story is set in a small town in northwest Missouri and features a group of kids who love to play in Chautauqua Park.

In 2006, she published a biography of a Missouri teacher-turned-vaudeville entertainer, Al Fike, the Modern Minstrel Man, 1912-1996. Fike was a popular vocalist, piano player and comedian who won a legion of fans nationwide in the 1950’s and 60’s.

Both books are available online or at major booksellers and most independent book stores.

The author holds a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia and lives with her family in Lafayette County, Missouri.
